Top 10 Tips to helping you see what type of RV you are really buying

There is really a lot to look for when buying a used rv.  Knowing what to look for can really make a difference in the quality of your buying experience.

Although most used rv seller's try to be honest, their are some that will try to take advantages of you.

These tips will help you see what kind of RV you are really buying and avoid getting taken advantages of very easily.

1. Is it still under factory warranty, or dealer warranty? What repairs will be covered? Some dealership will offer free maintenence for a limited time.

Others my offer free oil changes, dumping or winterization.

2. Does it have a fiberglass, rubber or metallic roof?  What condition is the roof in? Check the seals around the doors and windows

to see if the RV has been weather proofed.  Also is their any interior water damage.  Check inside around the tub and toilet.

3. Does the generator have a high number of hours on it? This is a good indicator of use.  Also worn out upholstery and high mileage are another indicator.

4. How much tread is left on the tires? This can help you see if RV mileage is accurate in some cases.  RVs that have been

sitting a while may have crack stating to show.  even with low mileage these tires will still need to be replaced.

Some tires cost up to $300 each to replace. If they do need to be replaced you could use this to negotiate a better price.

5. What shape are the RV's brakes in? Will they need to be service or soon replaced?

6. How does the asking value compare with the actual value, it may be difficult to get financing if the coach is over priced.

And you may loose a lot of money trying to resale it later.

7. Often for less than $150 dollars you can take a motorhome into a mechanic and have them do a basic diagnostic, cheek for leaks,

check breaks, and check hoses.  I will also allow you to get an independent third party opinion on the motorhome.

Also if you prove to be a qualified buyer, the dealership might let you test drive the motorhome for a day or two.  This would

be a great time to take it in to a mechanics shop.  When buying from a private owner, this is always recommended.

8. For RVs and Motor coaches: what is the towing capacity and what are you planning on towing

can it safely tow another vehicle, a trailer, or a boat.   For Fifthwheels and Trailer:  Can you safely tow it behind your truck

or car.

9.  Will it fit in my parking space at home.  You do not want to try to squeeze a 35 foot trailer into a 32 foot spot.  Will I have to store it?

10.  Ask for a copy of the maintenence report to see rv work that has been done and when it was done.
