What is flipping an Axle and is it safe to flip the axle on an rv trailer?
Axle flipping is a way of raising the trailer off the axle. Traditionally this is done by cutting the spring pads off the bottomof the spring and wielding them to the top of the axle. The axles is thus mounted below the spring rather then on top of the springs effecting the load on the springs and shackles. Extrem caution must be take to make sure the pad are weilded on straight or the trailer can become dog erded or even fall off the axle. because the load points were chaned their is less stability and the trailer is more likley to bounce.
The right way to flip a trailer axle is by changing the distance of your hanger springs. The easiest way to do this is if your shackles can be adjusted. Simply raise or lower them to the desired settings. If they can't be adjusted, you will have to cut the shackles from the frame railings. Then you will need to wield steel channels to the frame and than wield the shacle back on the channels. The end result is that the spring load is un altered and your stability should be the same that you started with. After flipping an axle you may also need to increase the size of your tires or bearing if you plan on increasing the weight of your vehicle.
Best luck flipping your RV trailer axle!
